The Galveston Seawall

At more than 17 feet high and 10 miles long, the Galveston seawall is the country's longest

continuous sidewalk and the largest mural in the world.

Today, Seawall Boulevard is a famed hot spot for beachgoers and acts as an iconic backdrop to a variety of restaurants, shops, and attractions. Though the Galveston Seawall was built to protect the city from storms, it's now a place where people from around the world come to enjoy the sights, sounds, and fun the attraction offers.

History of The Galveston Seawall

The Galveston Hurricane of 1900 devastated the city. The tidal wave and tremendous storm ripped out much of Galveston and took the lives of some 6,000 people. Following the tragedy, the resilient folks wanted to rebuild but also find a way to prevent

the devastation from occurring again.

The city appointed three engineers tasked with formulating a plan to protect Galveston from future

storms. Aside from raising the city up 12 feet above sea level, they also created the Galveston Seawall. In 1915, a stronger hurricane passed through the city, leaving less damage than in 1900. Thus, the Galveston Seawall proved its worth and continues to do so today.
